The American Kenpo Jiu-Jitsu (AKJJ) martial system is a blending of two practical and robust arts: American Kenpo and Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. American Kenpo is internationally recognized as one of the premier stand-up martial arts, well known for its speed and power. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the current world-leader in grappling and submissions.
We teach each art so that it remains true and complete to its unique style, yet combine them in seamless application. The synergy between the two arts is so complete you will not know where one ends and the other begins.
AKJJ is a complete martial art system. It contains all of the components for self-protection necessary for our contemporary urban environments:
-
Stand-up defense
-
Ground defense
-
Submissions
-
Modern weapon defense
American Kenpo is a martial art that takes full advantage of speed and power through the appropriate use of motion. We move our bodies in harmony with blocks and strikes to maximize power and minimize wasted motion. In higher ranks, blocks not only protect the defender, but double as strikes against the attacker.
American Kenpo is also a practical art, intended to defend against real street attacks. Techniques are designed to work in close-quarters, often never leaving contact with the attacker. On the street, conflicts are up close and personal. Standoffs and distance are the stuff of movies, not the real world.
We train in the ideal phase of the attack and defense recognizing full well it will never happen just as we practice in the real world. All of our techniques, from white to black belt, are designed to work in conjunction with each other. On the street, you may start out using one technique, but finish the altercation with another. The system’s flexibility allows for the spontaneous grafting of combinations to accommodate a nearly infinite number of situations.
The flexibility and dynamic grafting of techniques in American Kenpo is the core of the synergy between it and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. We are already in close contact with our attacker defending against strikes and with the slightest of movements we can shift to Jiu-Jitsu for a submission.
In a confrontation your responses are restricted by what you know. In a purely striking art, you respond with strikes. In a purely submission art, you respond with submissions. In American Kenpo Jiu-Jitsu you have all options available to you, empowering you to select the best response to a bad situation.
